I just returned from a short four days in Bali. I spent three of them with Wayan. He was my private driver and tour guide for seeing this most unique and amazing island culture. I’ve traveled all over Asia and must admit that Wayan made this the most memorable of all my travel experiences. Two minutes after we left the busy hotel beachfront, we were immersed in the rice fields and natural beauty of Bali. I had told Wayan that I wanted to see the culture and daily life of the Balinese people as well as the natural beauty of the island. I got this and so much more. He speaks English very clearly, was sensitive to my interests and desires, and was a true professional in sharing his island paradise with me. Our three days together provided a steady dialogue on history, traditions, beliefs, arts, culture, economics, etc.
Upon arriving in Bali, I discovered that there are only two ways to see the island. Join a tour group, or hire a driver. I hired Wayan. His rates were less than any of the tours or hotel taxis I saw, and very reasonable at that! I soon discovered that I had hired a professional tour guide, not just a driver. He led me to authentic food, temples and ceremonies in local villages, scenic views and took me on a private walk to an incredible waterfall. He recommended restaurants and evening entertainment and shared aspects of his culture that only a native could provide. My only regret was that I did not have more time. If you are after an authentic Balinese experience, do contact Wayan. You will not be disappointed.

My wife, Mary Lou, and I visited Bali for the first time in March of this year. A few months before the trip, I came across Wayan Merta’s web site offering his services as a driver/guide in Bali. I arranged for Wayan to take us around the island for three consecutive days. It was wonderful; arguably the best experience I have enjoyed travelling in over 40 countries. Wayan was a knowledgeable and insightful guide. We learned a great deal about the island’s culture and customs. At times, however, he was silent, allowing us to simply drink in the kaleidoscope which is Bali.
Wayan’s English is flawless. He has a ready smile. He is a man of warmth, culture and integrity. The word “classy” comes to mind. At a very reasonable rate, in his clean, well-maintained van, Wayan escorted us safely to three different areas of Bali. We visited some of the more famous sites. It was just before the Balinese New Year and there were preparations and processions everywhere. What a pageant! But the highlight was getting off the beaten track and spending hours on back roads seeing parts of Bali I am certain relatively few tourists ever see.
Wayan was always patient. We made innumerable stops for photos, bought fruit at roadside stands, ate at atmospheric restaurants with delicious food, and had an unscheduled swim at a lovely deserted white sand beach. Perhaps what shone through the most was Wayan’s love of his island, its culture and its beauty, its people and its heritage. He was so proud to show us “his Bali”. Wayan introduced us to a very special place. At one point I enthused that it was “more than great”. Wayan thought this very funny. But it really was. We fell in love with his Bali and we are looking forward to spending more days with Wayan experiencing this magical isle.
From Janus and Stephan
We arrived on 19 September and Wayan has been our only driver in Bali for ten days. (In contrast, we tried three drivers in Yogyakarta and none met Wayan standard). He invited us into his village, his mother showed us the ceremonies of the evening, and then taught us make a palm leaf design (a flying spirit).
He explained the inside life of a typical Balinese family and when we took him to lunch and dinner, he gave us extra insights to the native food. He has no expectations, you have to insist that he join you at the table, he never wants to take advantage of a situation. His rates are fair and you have to insist to add something for the gasoline and wear-and-tear on his automobile, because he won't ask for it. He's just a sweet guy and he'll do whatever you want.
Janus is a photo bug and she might see a beautiful scene and say, "Well, there's probably no room to stop." Wayan will find the room and make sure you get the photo. He also helps in negotiating prices and he carries a calculator in case you can't figure the conversion.
He freely offers the experience of past customers and he keeps a record of some of their suggestions: for example, in Mas, there is one particular furniture making factory that creates good quality and contemporary design -- you'll save time if you go there first. (This was the suggestion of one of his clients from Perth and we saved at least an hour of hunting around by buying there. Good prices, good quality).
He keeps brochures available for you to look at and he's very flexible with his schedule. When the weather went bad, he was ready with two alternative programs. And when it comes to good eating, he knows the best restaurants (courtesy of reports form his past clients) in Ubud, Kuta and Sanur and elsewhere in South Bali.
Finally, be sure to ask him to take you to the Barbecue (Ikan Bakar) on the Jimbaran beach near the airport. Ikan Bakar is the best!
